Demodex and rosacea

Demodex and rosacea

Demodex infection, skin mite, mite infestation, demodex mite. Any word you hear is a legitimate scare, especially when it's your face or head. Research in this area over the last few decades has led to major breakthroughs in the treatment of facial skin problems such as acne and rosacea, which can be applied in practical skin treatment and skin healing.

In 2010, the clinical science of dermatology accepted the publication of scientists that there is a direct link between rosacea and Demodex mite infection. What is a Demodex skin mite?

The whole research was prompted by the empirical fact that anti-itch treatments also relieve rosacea symptoms.

In Ireland, a university researcher, Dr Kevin Kavanagh, started to study skin and microscopic organisms living in the skin using a microscope.

As a result of his research, he described that these organisms can be detected in healthy human skin, but if the immune system or skin structure is damaged, they multiply abnormally and then form a vicious circle and create further severe damage to the skin structure.

According to Kavanagh's research, a healthy adult human skin has one or two demodex skin cells per 1 square centimetre of facial surface area. On facial skin showing symptoms of rosacea, this number can be up to 10X as much.

He has also observed that stress changes the composition of skin sebum in a positive direction for skin hair follicles - which means that they reproduce better on the more beneficial food. This can cause a flare-up of rosacea symptoms in stressful situations.

Kavanagh's other observation is that some antibacterial drugs cause a temporary improvement in rosacea symptoms, even though they have no effect on mites. He therefore carried out further studies and recognised that bacteria living in the mite faeces (mainly Bacillus oleronius, but in some cases other powerful pus-causing bacteria) also play a major role in the cause of rosacea, acne-rosacea symptoms.

These skin cells do not excrete waste material, but collect it on their own, so to speak - their abdomens get bigger and bigger, until finally when they die and disintegrate, their waste material and the bacteria, virus, fungus population living there is released into the pores of the skin. Kavanagh believes that the continuous load of bacterial infestation by a large mite population triggers an immune response, inflammation and tissue damage in the skin tissues. We see this in the redness and warmth of the face, because there is inflammation not only of the skin but in many cases of the connective tissue and muscular system.

The Demodex mite infection does not go away on its own. It definitely requires treatment.

The method and duration of treatment will always depend on the extent of the infection. The treatment only kills the skin and hair follicle mites, but not the eggs, which is why it is important to pay attention to the duration of the treatment, which should be at least 2-3 months, so that 3 populations are treated and the result is long lasting. In addition, it should also be borne in mind that the result will only be long-lasting if the skin structure is normalised.

The main causes of skin balance shifts:

1. Digestive weakness (inflammation, parasites, even stress)

2. Food intolerance, histamine overload in the body due to allergies

3. Gluten toxicity, from chemicalised cereals

4. Thinning of the epidermis

5. Thickening of connective tissue and/or increased hairiness

6. Blood supply obstruction due to increased muscle tension

7. Shift in the microbiological flora of the skin

8. Skin infection

9. Redness, inflammation of connective tissue caused by damaged skin structure

10. Hormonal changes can aggravate skin conditions

11. Vascular weakness, development of inflammation

Eliminating the infection is not easy, but there is a chance

Kavanagh has carried out in vitro experiments in test tubes showing that:

  • 100% alcohol in 4 minutes
  • 50% tea tree oil in 15 minutes
  • 100% tea tree oil in 4 minutes
  • 100% cumin oil in 4 minutes
  • 100% dill seed oil killed mites in 14 minutes
This does not mean, of course, that you can treat your skin with concentrated essential oils, even dill seed oil or tea tree oil! It is forbidden. They cause serious scaling and tissue damage.

In Hungary, no formal human research has been carried out on the subject of skin cancer, and no research results have been published. Therefore, we can base our treatment recommendations on empirical experience or on the therapeutic successes achieved so far, which fortunately are very promising.

The efficacy of the mainly synthetic drugs currently available in pharmacies is questionable to me. According to our patients' reports, after the initial symptomatic relief, the inflammation flares up even more strongly, so they do not prove to be effective against the Demodex mite in the long term. We now know why this is possible: it is easy to develop resistance when you want to kill the skin mites. The first colony dies out, but the new colony that hatches from the eggs is stronger and does not react to the chemicals.

Similar results have been obtained in trials with foreign marketed products. For this reason, it is generally accepted that rosacea is not a curable disease.

But this is not true. But it is true that neither cosmetics nor medicines alone will help. A complex treatment is needed to normalise the demodex mite population and at the same time normalise the skin structure to prevent re-infection.

A fully conscious all-encompassing treatment is needed, with attention to:

  • Elimination of bacterial infection, inflammation - with antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents
  • Normalisation of the existing mite population - antiseptic, anti-mitic topical skincare protocol for at least 2 months with specific complex active ingredients, herbs
  • Skin texture normalisation with intensive dermal resurfacing active ingredients - restoring the natural protective function of the complexion

Prevention - to prevent and avoid skin scratch re-infection, the following rules should be followed from the start of skin care:

  1. avoid the use of steroid creams and ointments, as they strongly promote the reproduction of Demodex mites
  2. pay careful attention to the pillowcase - 100% cotton linen, and preferably freshly washed and ironed every day throughout the treatment.
  3. the bed should also be disinfected, especially the headboard - e.g. wiped with tea tree oil, then "ironed" through a clean cotton sheet with an iron or steam cleaned
  4. it is a good idea to wash the linen, towels and the entire bedding set frequently at a minimum of 60 degrees
  5. disinfect everything that may come into contact with your head and face (e.g. 100% tea tree oil, steam cleaning) - combs, hair clips, hair elastics, glasses, hats, caps
  6. use a disposable mouth mask during restrictions, a new one every day, or wash and disinfect a permanent mask every day with ironing!
  7. only use a beautician or hairdresser who we are sure follows good hygiene principles (e.g. autoclave 120 C for 20 minutes, or all dangerous instruments, 15 minutes soaking in 100% alcohol after each guest) - such as exfoliating brushes, eyebrow tweezers, microdermabrasion heads, - combs, scissors, etc.
  8. make your household chemical-free - especially when it comes to detergents, rinses, cleaning products and cosmetics, it is worth switching to environmentally and people-friendly products - chemicals are the ones that damage the skin the most, giving pathogens a chance to enter https://borgyogyitas.hu/leggyakoribb-mergek-a-kozmetikumokban
  9. boosting the immune system - vegetables, fruit, vitamins, superfoods - it's worth going low-carb, sugar-free, dairy-free, industrial gluten-free
  10. reduce stress in our lives - finally get a good night's sleep, get a few hours of rest every day, relax, go out in nature
