What is Demodex?
Recent research suggests that the Demodex mite plays a role in the development of skin sensitivity, acne and rosacea.
In Ireland, a university researcher, Dr Kevin Kavanagh, has begun to study the skin and microscopic organisms living in the skin under the microscope.
As a result of his research, he described how these tiny organisms can be detected in healthy human skin, but when the immune system or skin functions are compromised, they multiply abnormally and then cause severe damage to the skin's structure.
The tiny mites (0.1-0.3mm), which live mainly in the pores and hair follicles of the skin, are eight-legged animals of the spider family (also known as Demodex mites). They are particularly fond of the hair follicles of the eyebrows and eyelashes and often appear in the oilier pores of the nose, forehead and cheeks, feeding on sebum, the sebum produced by the skin. At night, in the dark, they crawl to mate on the surface of the skin, then crawl back to lay their eggs (12-14 eggs) in the pores of the skin and eventually die. A mature Demodex mite lays 20-25 eggs in the hair follicle and then dies. Their life cycle is 14-18 days, during which they concentrate on reproduction and can live between -20 and 60 degrees Celsius.

According to Kavanagh's research, a healthy adult human skin has one or two mites per 1 square centimetre of facial surface area.
He has also observed that stress or hormones can change the composition of skin sebum in a positive way for mites - making them more likely to reproduce on the food they prefer. This can cause a flare-up of symptoms in stressful situations and during hormonal treatments (e.g. contraceptives).
Kavanagh's other observation is that bacteria live in these skin cells, and that these bacteria (Bacillus oleronius and other bacteria that can be pus-causing) living in the mites' faeces also play a major role in the inflammatory symptoms of the skin.
In fact, these demodex skin flukes do not excrete waste material, but collect it on their own, so to speak - their abdomens get bigger and bigger, until finally when they die and disintegrate, their waste material and the population of bacteria, viruses and fungi living there are released into the pores of the skin. Kavanagh believes that this continuous burden of infection by this large mite population causes an immune response, inflammation and tissue damage in the skin tissue.
There are two types of Demodex mites, Demodex follicorum and Demodex bravis.
Demodex follicorum lives and lays its eggs mainly in the scalp and on the eyelashes. The average male is 280 microns long and 50 microns wide. The average length of the female is 300 microns, width 60 microns - this is mainly responsible for baldness, abnormal scalp dandruff and the development of the T-zone skin condition with large pores.
Demodex bravis is much smaller than Demodex follicorum and lives in the pores of the face. The average length of the male is 160 microns and the average width is 50 microns. The average female is 200 microns long and 50 microns wide, and is most responsible for skin sensitivity, rosacea and problem skin.
Infection is defined as 10 or more mites in a hair follicle or sebaceous gland. In this case, it is very likely to trigger an immune response. The disease is called : demodectosis.
Symptoms of demodex infection:
- sensitive skin/scalp prone to redness, even scarring
- warm skin
- skin is more prone to dryness
- The skin becomes inflamed and then improves in 2-3 week intervals - later, at the time of the burst, pus-filled blisters may appear - this indicates deeper tissue damage

Infection rates increase with age. Around the age of 5, it is almost non-existent, starting at puberty during adolescent immune weakness, and inflamed acne can contain a high percentage of mites. If the skin is not treated correctly at this stage, the result can be (chronic) problem skin that lasts for decades. Most adult problem skin has its origins in adolescence.
The menopause is also a risk period, when the next big jump in reproduction occurs: researchers estimate it at 45-47%, due to changes in the hormonal system and weakened digestion.By the age of 60, the chance of infection reaches 84%, and over the age of 70, with almost no prevention, the chance of infection can be up to 100%.
Who could be affected by the infection?
- when pubertal acne becomes unmanageable and is constantly inflamed
- whose hair is starting to break or fall out heavily
- itchy, even flaky, sore scalp, and it feels like something is moving the hair or crawling on it, but you can't see anything
- when your scalp is flaky, (dandruffy), oily or very dry
- sensitive, drawn, red skin, possibly scaly or oily blackheads (T line problem)
- we have rhizomatous symptoms
Conditions: seborrheic dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, rosacea, acne, alopecia
The Demodex mite infection does not go away on its own. It definitely requires complex skin care.
The method and duration of skin care will always depend on the extent of the infection. Treatment only kills mites, not eggs, so it is important to pay attention to the duration of treatment.
Balancing them is not an easy task, but there is a chance.
Kavanagh has carried out in vitro experiments in test tubes showing that:
- 100% alcohol in 4 minutes
- 50% tea tree oil in 15 minutes
- 100% tea tree oil in 4 minutes
- 100% cumin oil in 4 minutes
- 100% dill seed oil killed mites in 14 minutes
No research has been carried out on the subject in Hungary, and no research results have been published. The efficacy of the current commercially available, mainly used chemicals has been investigated by several dermatologists and cosmetologists in microscopic follow-up studies and has been shown to be not effective against the Demodex mite in the long term. Similar results have been obtained in trials with products on the market abroad. It is for this reason that it has become generally accepted that rosacea is not a curable disease.
But this is not true. But we have also found that neither cosmetics nor medicines alone help.
A fully conscious all-encompassing treatment is needed, with attention to:
- Elimination of bacterial infection, inflammation - with antibacterial agents
- Normalisation of existing mite population - antiseptic, anti-mitic topical skincare protocol for at least 2 months
- Regeneration of damaged skin with pure and effective cosmetics - restoring the natural protective function of the complexion
- Prevention - to prevent and avoid reinfection - the following rules should be followed from the start of care:
- avoid the use of steroid creams and ointments, as they strongly promote the reproduction of Demodex mites
-
always wipe the treated skin dry with a clean towel or paper towel after cleansing
- pay careful attention to pillowcases and towels - 100% cotton linen, preferably freshly laundered and ironed every day throughout the treatment.
- the bed should also be disinfected, especially the headboard - e.g. wiped with tea tree oil, then "ironed" through a clean cotton sheet with an iron or steam cleaned
- it is a good idea to wash the linen, towels and the entire bedding set frequently at a minimum of 60 degrees
- disinfect everything that may come into contact with your head and face (e.g. 100% tea tree oil, steam cleaning) - combs, hair clips, hair elastics, glasses, hats, caps
- only use a cosmetician or hairdresser who we are sure follows good hygiene principles (e.g. autoclave 120 C for 20 minutes, or all dangerous instruments, 15 minutes soaking in 100% alcohol after each guest) - such as exfoliating brushes, eyebrow tweezers, microdermabrasion heads, - combs, scissors, etc.
- the treatment of an immediate family member is also essential for recovery (sleeping with someone, using a pillow, bed linen, "head and face touching")
- make your household chemical-free - especially when it comes to detergents, rinses, cleaning products and cosmetics, it is worth switching to environmentally and people-friendly products - chemicals are the ones that damage the skin the most, giving pathogens a chance to enter https://borgyogyitas.hu/leggyakoribb-mergek-a-kozmetikumokban
- boosting the immune system - vegetables, fruit, vitamins, superfoods - it's worth going on a low-carb, sugar-free diet
- reduce the stress in our lives - finally get a good night's sleep, get a few hours of rest every day, relax, go out in nature
