The secret of mistletoe

The secret of mistletoe

The romantic kiss is linked to the magic of mistletoe. Why is that ?

According to an old tradition, when a couple under mistletoe kiss, it symbolises eternal love - with origins dating back to Norse mythology.

History:

Balder, the handsome and handsome god, has been warned to be careful because someone is trying to kill him. Frigg, the god's mother, made all living things promise not to harm her son, so she tried to protect Balder. But the insignificant-looking mistletoe eluded her.

Loki, the evil god, noticed Frigg's omission and put him to his evil purposes. When the gods held a feast in Valhalla, Loki went, uninvited. He hid and watched the gods revel, who shot arrows at Balder in jest. Loki saw that the god was not at all wounded by the arrows, being invulnerable. Loki, always looking for harm, put an arrow made of mistletoe into the hands of the blind Hermöd, and the god struck him right in the heart of Balder, who fell dead.

The other gods were thus terribly angry with the mistletoe for taking the life of their beloved god. They allowed Frigg, the goddess of love, to do with the plant as she pleased.

Frigg, however, did not want to hurt the plant, but rather made it a symbol of love. As her tears fell on the plant, someone blew a kiss on her cheek, and the tears turned into tiny white berries. Frigg then wished that the mistletoe would never harm anyone again; and that whoever came under it would be given the opportunity to love and forgive. He asked that those who ever stood under it to kiss each other as a sign of love and forgiveness.
