How to choose a natural foundation!

Perfect chemical-free foundations

Can we give up silicone creams and foundations that age our skin in the long term? Yes, if we can find one that works for us. Of course, once our skin becomes problematic, we want to change immediately, but even then it's hard to find a good one because there are very few really good natural foundations.

We help you make a convincing case for why you should switch to a high-tech natural foundation.

What is a chemical-free, natural foundation?

Traditional foundations are basically full of silicones and chemical formulas that may achieve the expected results - if at all - but they don't contribute to the care of our skin. They may contain the occasional natural ingredient, but the phrase 'with argan oil' on the front of the bottle doesn't always mean that it's present in more than a few percent of the product. It is easy to see for everyone if you study the ingredients of the most popular, well-known brands of foundations currently available in Hungary. We did.

The main ingredient in most traditional foundations are various silicone-based ingredients that are added to the products for easy application. The silicone is not utilised by our skin in any form, meaning it remains on the surface of the skin and is not completely harmless according to the internationally recognised EWG. But you can find even more dangerous ingredients in them.

What shouldn't be in a chemical-free, natural foundation?

Preservatives

The hormone-disrupting paraben has almost disappeared from the ingredient lists of major brands, but has been replaced by the lesser-known BHT. BHT is a mildly risky ingredient, according to the EWG, and can cause irritation and minor interference with the endocrine system. Although only three studies have yet found a link between cancer and the ingredient - so it's not yet scientifically proven - this is not the news you want to hear about a foundation ingredient.

Sunscreens

Natural foundations are also sunscreens - which is great - because it's basically good if the foundation contains some form of sunscreen. This should be mechanical sun protection, provided by the minerals that build up the foundation.

DRHAZI Anti age foundations SPF30++, Oilfree foundations SPF50++ provide sun protection.

The problem is that, in order to be easy to spread and invisible, these are typically chemical sunscreens that interfere with hormone balance. You can find our full article on chemical sunscreens of concern here.

Irritating fragrances and colours

You can find perfume in almost all traditional foundations.Did you know that pigment spots are mostly caused by perfume???

On the one hand, for a primer to work properly - to provide coverage - you don't really need a perfume. On the other hand, these perfumes are usually synthetic fragrances, so they can contain anything from hormone disrupting ingredients to irritants. We don't know exactly, as manufacturers don't have to specify.

For people with sensitive skin, fragrances - even those of natural origin - are generally to be avoided, while in the case of unknown, synthetic perfumes, we have no idea what has gone into the product. And before we say that the perfume is only present in small quantities in the product: unfortunately, this is not always true, sometimes it is in the middle of the ingredient list.

Another area of concern is dyes, which can often cause allergies. Examples are CL15850, which can be irritating and potentially contaminated with harmful minerals, or Ferrix ferrocyanide, which is apparently so toxic that it is not approved for use in lip products in the US. Of course, it's fine to put it on your face... (and it's a perfectly acceptable cosmetic colouring in the EU).

PEGs

Many foundations contain PEGs that make the skin permeable. They are supposed to make the product more absorbable, but they also allow all the ingredients to reach the deeper layers of your skin: including irritants and hormone disruptors. Who wants that?

While more and more people are reading the actual ingredients for normal cosmetics, the situation is not so clear for make-up: especially as the kilometres of ingredients lists do not always fit on the tiny jars, so they can only be found on the manufacturer's website or on the ingredient lists next to the cosmetic stands.

So if you've experienced irritation, redness or even an allergic reaction after using a foundation or other makeup product, it's no wonder. Even if you haven't developed an allergy or sensitivity, the presence of hormone-disrupting ingredients makes me question whether it's worth using a conventional foundation.

The natural, chemical-free foundation

Here's what you can expect from natural and chemical-free foundations:

  • valuable active ingredient content: nourishes the skin while the foundation itself is easy to spread
  • contains a physical sunscreen that is not nano
  • the preservative it contains is not endocrine disrupting, rather it can be beneficial, like Totarol, which is a super antioxidant and prevents skin infections
  • the natural iron oxide of the colouring agent and the bio pigments of the natural foundation have the great advantage of being very well adapted to the skin. So it's not mainly the skin tone that determines which shade you choose, but the result you want.
  • fragrance-free, contains only aromatherapy, i.e. pure, natural essential oils
