How does a Demodex infection develop?
Over the past hundred years, plastic and mineral oil-based cosmetics, strong synthetic surfactants, personal care and cleaning products have created a serious general skin damage and imbalance. Today, on average 80% of people suffer from some degree of skin sensitivity.
Many people report that they are satisfied for a short time with the current, even very expensive, conventional products, but after a short time they often experience sensitivity and irritation. Restoring the microbiome can only be successful if the skin structure is normalised and healed at the same time.
What is the Demodex mite?
The tiny mites (0.1-0.3mm), which live mainly in the pores and hair follicles of the skin, are eight-legged animals of the spider family (also known as Demodex mites). They are particularly fond of the hair follicles of the eyebrows and eyelashes and often appear in the oilier pores of the nose, forehead and cheeks, feeding on sebum, the sebum produced by the skin. At night, in the dark, they crawl to mate on the surface of the skin, then crawl back to lay their eggs (12-14 eggs) in the pores of the skin and eventually die. A mature Demodex mite lays 20-25 eggs in the hair follicle and then dies. Their life cycle is 14-18 days, during which they concentrate on reproduction and can live between -20 and 60 degrees Celsius.
The Demodex mite is detectable even on healthy skin, but it easily multiplies on skin with an imbalance. Excessive presence causes serious damage to the physiology and structure of the skin. The skin may react with inflammation, irritation and even increased skin sensitivity.
Over the past 150 years, many researchers have studied the natural organisms that live on the skin and discovered that, like the gut flora, the skin has a natural bacterial flora (microbiome). When this is broken down by stress, chemicals, drugs, hormones or any other cause, pathogens such as demodex mites, fungi or viruses multiply on the skin, causing further damage to the skin's structure.
